Three vocalists, oceans apart, are brought together by their love of song and spontaneous invention. Riding the musical currents of Portuguese, African, Brazilian, Jazz and Soul and meeting in the uncharted waters of improvisation, Katia, Laurel and Heidi take listeners on a journey from the sublime to the unexpected.

Katia Leonardo Bio
Born in Luanda, Angola, were she lived for 10 years, Katia Leonardo is a portuguese World Music singer and composer. She holds a post-bachelor degree from the Jazz program at the University of Music in Porto (Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo) where she studied with the renowned vocalist, Maria Joao. Katia has pursued her studies in Jazz, African, Fado, Brazilian Modern Music, Improvisation and Vocal Technique for the past 15 years.
Katia Leonardo has been featured at the "Hot Clube de Portugal" and has appeared with her quintet at numerous Portuguese jazz festivals. She has also performed and taught in Europe, Canada and in the US, celebrating the music of her heritage and building a bridge between cultures through song, movement and poetry. Katia has been fortunate to work with a number of well known artists, including Portuguese icon, Ze Mario Branco and Ze Eduardo’s Big Band. In addition to her work as a performer, she has spent the past six years studying the art of vocal improvisation with acclaimed singer and teacher, Rhiannon (of Bobby McFerrin's "Voicestra"). Katia now offers these techniques to students from diverse backgrounds, encouraging authenticity, connection and expanded vocal awareness, as well as introducing new concepts in sound for healing. www.myspace/katialeonardo

Heidi McCurdy Bio
Heidi McCurdy sings from a place where pop, jazz and soul meet. With hip rhythms, thick harmonies and clever lyrics, Heidi ’s music enchants listeners and compels them to sing along. She draws on an eclectic array of influences - jazz, world, gospel, soul, Stevie Wonder, India Arie, Erykah Badu, Bjork, The Police - and mixes them up with a modern pop sensibility. Her song Fickle Mind won first place in the Write On ’97 songwriting contest. In May 2004, her song Placebo earned Honorable Mention with international Song of the Year. She has won numerous awards on www.garageband.com including Best Female Vocals and Track of the Day.
In the early 1990’s, Heidi co-founded the world/funk band Yellow Belly, which released an independent CD, completed two cross-Canada tours, and had several songs top the charts on MP3.com and college radio. Yellow Belly shared stages with The Bare Naked Ladies, Papa Wemba, Steele Pulse, and 54-40.
Heidi has been a featured vocalist with Bittersweet, the Alexander Browne Orchestra and Johnny Ferreira and the Swing Machine, and a guest with Brickhouse, Soul Stream, Jason Mitchell and Kia Kadiri. She has performed in Europe, the U.S.A., and Canada, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2005 (with Bittersweet). Her current backing band Urban Tribe consists of some of Vancouver’s finest musicians, performing funky originals and jazz standards.

Laurel Murphy bio
Laurel Murphy is a Vancouver-born singer, improviser and teacher. Her approach to music is eclectic--influenced by years of voice training, formal jazz studies, and a love of music from around the world. Her vocals have been featured in a variety of performance settings as well as in the studio. In addition to performances of jazz repertoire, Laurel has been working on a body of solo compositions and improvisations with state of the art electronics and live vocal looping. A lover of collaboration, she has worked with Mascall Dance, Karen Jamieson Dance and Main Dance, as well as in the vocal improvisation ensembles “ImproVox”, “Barefoot” and “VocoLoco”. Laurel has studied, recorded and performed with Rhiannon and other members of Bobby McFerrin’s “Voicestra” and was featured in the documentary “SING!” (Bravo/VisionTV) in the year 2000. She is the creator and producer of SongRise (1995 and 1999 improvised vocal events) and currently teaches the art of vocal improvisation in and outside of Vancouver. She is also very interested in the power of sound for relaxation and healing and has worked with the Callanish Society in this context since 2004.Laurel has a number of recording projects in the works, featuring jazz repertoire, improvised choral work, looped compositions and soundscapes for healing.
