WORKSHOP INFORMATION SEE BELOW Rhiannon
(of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra) An Unforgettable Evening of Song, Story and Spontaneous Invention! Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist and performance artist Rhiannon from San Francisco will be perfoming for one night only at The Vancouver East Cultural Centre (1895 Venables Street) on Thursday, November 24th at 8 PM. She will share the stage with her long-time friend and collaborator, Vancouver singer Laurel Murphy (creator of SongRise.) Rhiannon and Laurel bring their love of the improvised unknown to this very unique concert, moving freely between structured songs with instrumental elements to improvised a cappella compositions. We jump into the current of this mighty musical river and off we go. It's a captivating blend: the humour and surprise of free improvisation, a metamorphasis of sound into words, harmonies into melodies, melodies into songs and back again. At various points of the evening, the audience will be invited to join in. Some extraordinary and very special guests will include Daryl Jahnke, guitar, Shine Edgar and Zachary Sukuweh, didgeridu and percussion, plus a number of gifted vocalists. Tickets available
through Ticketmaster 604-280-3311.

November 25 Rhiannon's singing gatherings celebrate the joyful and deeply spiritual nature of singing in community. We will sing songs created in the moment, the body and voice dancing together as an instrument of sound and healing. Using call and response, interlocking rhythms and melodies, and the development of vocal skills, we will find our way to the ecstasy of individual and group musical improvisation. For all lovers of singing, no experience necessary. $50 Saturday/Sunday,
November 26/27 10am-5:00pm with 1hr break for lunch (registration 9:45am) A gathering of voices, a chance to be heard, to blend, to hear your breath turn into improvised song, to feel your body making music in the safe and wildly dynamic circle of other singers. Rhiannon's workshops help singers find their own place in the world of music where invention and intuition meet skill and heart. Working alone, in pairs, and in ensemble, singers delve deeply into the possibilities of spontaneously composed music, strengthening their skills in rhythm, vocal technique, body integration, harmony, and ear training. Improvisation exercises serve as tools, putting these various elements into musical context, encouraging deep listening and musical awareness and heightening creativity. Limited to 18 participants. By audition. For experienced singers with intermediate to advanced improvisation skills. Cost: $300 ($50 non-refundable deposit) By audition. Please click here for to register for either workshop.

SINGING RHIANNONS PRAISES
Rhiannon is a singer whose pliable and authoritative voice
moves from a warm, throaty quality to virtuoso scat singing to a broad
and lusty growl. John S. Wilson, NEW YORK TIMES
When
Voicestra vocalist Rhiannon stood up for her solo and shook the music
out of her chest, wheezing and spitting out notes, she had gone from
a simple impression of an existing instrument into a realm of her own
invention. Joel Selvin, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
Rhiannons
voice is a rainbow. Michael Bourne, DOWNBEAT
Her
voice is musically superlative and her free, inventive phrasing is daring
and original. She can take your breathe away. George Anderson,
PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE
Rhiannon
takes chances that no other singer would. She seems to know intuitively
where to go and just how far at any moment. Larry Kelp, OAKLAND
TRIBUNE
Her
panoramic voice remains among the wonders of modern music. Neil
